There is no single day on the American sports calendar that is as revered or universally observed like Super Bowl Sunday. It is as close to an unofficial national holiday as there is anywhere.
It’s also the day that the sports gambling world shows itself off, with over-the-top wagers and huge takes and payouts. In fact, more than $4 billion is wagered on Super Bowl Sunday and on bets that can pay off before the game, during, and long after the Lombardi Trophy is awarded.
Even before the opening kickoff, the pregame props are flying fast and furious. You can wager on the coin toss, of course. And you can do the probability math right in your head. You have a 50/50 chance of winning (.).
And you can even wager on who wins the coin toss. So it’s not just a bet on heads or tails, but if the team that chooses heads wins or loses the toss. And then the game.
One of the more popular bets is the length of the National Anthem. The average is just under two minutes, but that varies by the type of artist that is singing. And you can even bet on which beer and soda commercials will be the first to air.
What will the first score be? Who will score it? Will that person hand the ball to a boy or girl in the stands? Yes, you can bet on all of these things.
Most player propositions are broken down by position. Which quarterback will throw for the most yards, touchdowns, and interceptions? Will any of those interceptions be returned for a touchdown? There are also props for rushing and receiving yards, catches, drops, fumbles, tackles, field goals, and anything and everything that can be considered a stat.
You can even place a wager on if the MVP of the game will announce his retirement during his MVP acceptance speech. When Cam Newton was in the Super Bowl, you could bet on the number of times he did his Superman pose. (As it turned out, it didn’t happen much.)
Will the team that scores first win? Will someone other than the quarterback throw a touchdown pass? Which team will get the most first downs? Will someone decide to go for it on fourth down?
Obviously, there is still big money down on the things you would expect, like the , , and . But you can actually wager proposition bet-only parlays, and almost anything a team might do or accomplish throughout the course of the game is available. Like the color of the Gatorade that will be dumped on the winning coach. That is a bet, and people actually put money on it.
As you can see, it is one of the best days on the sports gambling calendar, and one of the strangest. And that is why so many people plan their weddings, vacations, and even surgeries, around Super Bowl Sunday. It’s an event that simply can’t be missed.
